Byzantine art is the artistic production of the Byzantine Empire since 4th cent. to the Fall of Istanbul (Constantinople) in 1453. Byzantine artworks have not been made just for admiration. They have been made in order to cover a wide range of practical needs (devotional, teaching, sociopolitical and private). The pursuit of artistic refinement was not a simple game with forms, aiming to aesthetic pleasure, but a means of rendering effective images for the utilitarian function they served.
